Radio 2’s Chris Evans: ‘Marriage doesn’t work at all anymore’

C4M has hit back at Radio 2 presenter Chris Evans after his attack on marriage on national TV at the weekend.

Speaking on Channel 4’s Sunday Brunch show, Evans claimed that marriage is outdated and oppressive to women, despite being married to his third wife Natasha Shishmanian.

He said: “We began to get married 3000 years ago, which is about the ownership of a woman by a man, and actually, as a model it doesn’t work at all anymore.”

His remarks were labelled “nonsense” by Dr Sharon James, spokeswoman for C4M.

Speaking on BBC Tees, Dr James said: “This is complete nonsense, it is not about ownership”.

“Marriage is the ultimate equality when two people stand and say together, ‘I’m going to stay with you for life’. It’s the most wonderful union that two people can make to each other and it’s actually the building block of society.”

She added that marriage is “a great stability and security for both men and women and of course absolutely for any children that their union produces”.

Stable marriages create stable families and a healthy environment for the procreation and rearing of children.

This is part of what motivated our opposition to the redefinition of marriage, which will deprive children of the best environment they could have to grow up in.

The very fabric of society has been attacked through the redefinition of marriage and we are yet to fully see the ramifications.
