Star Trek legend: Ashers have the right to say ‘bake it? No!’

Jun 5, 2015

Who would have thought it? Sir Patrick Stewart, star of stage and screen and prominent gay marriage supporter has backed the right of Ashers Baking Company to stand up for their beliefs about marriage.

Sir Patrick, best known as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation, has ‘boldly’ gone to the aid of the McArthur family, who hit the headlines for refusing to provide a cake promoting gay marriage.

In an interview on Newsnight earlier this week he told presenter Evan Davis: “I found myself on the side of the bakers”.

“It was not because this was a gay couple that they objected, it was not because they were going to be celebrating some kind of marriage or agreement between them. It was the actual words on the cake that they objected to, because they found them offensive.

“And I would support their right to say ‘no this is personally offensive to my beliefs, I will not do it’.”

As outspoken as he is on gay marriage, C4M commends Sir Patrick for recognising how wrong it is to coerce this small family-run business into promoting a cause with which it fundamentally disagrees.
