Dilute Archbishop Role to Avoid Split?

The role of the Archbishop of Canterbury in leading the 85-million-strong global Anglican Communion could soon be diluted in an attempt to avert a growing schism over marriage and sexuality. This development comes at the same time as Synod (the Church of England’s governing body) takes place this week.

Historically, the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Church of England’s most senior bishop, has served as a focal point of unity for Anglicans worldwide. This role emerged through missionary efforts across the British Empire in the 18th and 19th centuries, which gave rise to the Anglican Communion.

However, gaping rifts have emerged in recent decades, as liberal Anglican churches, predominantly in developed countries, have increasingly abandoned traditional biblical teachings on marriage and sexuality. These widening divisions now threaten the very unity that the Archbishop’s global role has historically maintained.

A proposal from a key representative body within the Communion, tasked with reviewing its structures, suggests creating a rotating international figurehead who would assume many of the Archbishop’s international responsibilities. The Archbishop of Canterbury would then retain only a personal and pastoral ministry in the Communion.

What a sorry mess is created when churches abandon their historic beliefs, especially on something as foundational as marriage!

Additionally, reports emerged this week of a brewing “civil war” within Church of England parishes, with liberal clergy alleging they are being prevented from performing same-sex blessings by senior colleagues.

At C4M, we understand that real marriage is vital for sustaining healthy families and stable societies across generations. Millions of Anglicans rightly refuse to abandon it without a fight. Rather than diluting the leadership role of the Archbishop of Canterbury – an approach that risks further division – why not return instead to a clear and robust endorsement of man-woman marriage? Who knows, it might just catch on and bring people back to the Church!
