IMAMS URGE ALL MUSLIMS NOT TO VOTE FOR CANDIDATES WHO SUPPORT REDEFINING MARRIAGE

Imams from Scotland’s largest mosques yesterday told all Muslims north of the border not to vote in the local elections on 3 May for any candidate who supports redefining marriage, even if that means not voting at all.

The Council of Glasgow Imams issued a statement, saying: “We will be urging our community from the pulpit to make sure that any person they consider voting for does not favour the proposed legislation.”

Muslim community leader Bashir Maan added: “I would say that if they don’t find anybody who is against the legislation then I don’t think they have to vote. It’s not compulsory that they must vote. We will vote for anybody who does not support the legislation, that’s it.”

At the end of last year the Scottish Government held a consultation on whether to redefine marriage to introduce gay marriage. It is now analysing the responses. The SNP-led Government says it “tends towards” redefinition, but will listen to all views before making a final decision.

Meanwhile, the Westminster Government is currently holding its own consultation on redefining marriage which ends in June. Almost 500,000 people have signed the Coalition for Marriage’s petition against the proposal.
