Ashers Baking Company has won its case at the Supreme Court – after nearly four and a half years.

This is an emphatic victory for free speech. Five of the UK’s top judges have ruled that the law cannot compel someone to endorse a message with which they fundamentally disagree.

This ruling was vital, not just for the McArthur family who own and run Ashers bakery, but for business owners across the UK.

Action was taken against Ashers bakery by the taxpayer-funded Equality Commission for Northern Ireland, for failing to fulfil an order for a gay marriage campaign cake. The Commission has spent at least £150,000 pursuing the bakery in the courts.

Despite this, the freedom to stand up for a belief in traditional marriage and to express that belief has been shown to be worthy of protection. It is a ruling that protects freedom of speech and freedom of conscience for all.

We must continue to work together in taking a stand for true marriage.
